It is common for individuals to experience stress; however, this should not be prolonged.

In December 2019, my life took a sharp turn. At the time, I had been in the corporate world for nearly two decades. Although I had risen in rank, I had become physically and emotionally depleted.

I constantly sacrificed my nutrition and rest to meet deadlines and work demands. There were days I drank coffee instead of having breakfast, relying on caffeine to power me through the day. 

The lunches I chose were quick, nutrient-deficient and often eaten at my desk. Because of that, I craved snacks like Snicker bars and another cup of coffee to sustain me for the rest of the day. I was addicted to the sugar and caffeine high. Eventually, I had to learn the hard way that this vicious cycle was depleting my body of energy and sleep.

Then came the eye-opener. While sitting on the couch with my husband one evening, a wave of lifelessness washed over me. I felt like my heart had stopped beating, and my pulse had gone silent. I was experiencing the depths of burnout with no energy left to engage in a simple conversation. The toll of chronic stress and sleep deprivation had left me longing to retreat into a ball and pretend this nightmare wasn’t happening.

But that wasn’t the only thing that frightened me.

Subsequently, one morning during a Christmas trip to Kuala Lumpur (to which I packed my work laptop to get some work done!), a sudden and intense chest pain pierced through me as I began working. This sensation was something I had never encountered before! My initial fear was that I was having a heart attack, yet I hesitated, hoping it would dissipate. Unfortunately, it persisted. We rushed to an urgent care clinic, where I underwent cardiac tests, only to discover that it was a panic attack.

Although I reminisce casually now, it was one of the most terrifying moments of my life. I grappled with the thought of experiencing a heart attack at a young age, which shook me to my core. I most certainly don’t want you to endure this fear, either!

This alarming incident helped me turn a new leaf. I embarked on a journey of discovery, uncovering better ways to nourish and energise my body, unlocking more vitality and productivity.

I realised that whether your driving force is your family, your career, or the desire to climb Mt. Everest or enjoy precious moments with your grandchildren in your “golden years”, it is crucial to start prioritising self-care. Not someday soon, but today!

Health issues can sneak up on us when we least expect them. It certainly did for me. Fortunately, I have been able to reverse the course of my well-being and reclaim my health. I no longer crave sugar or depend on coffee to power through my days.
